Getting orthodontic treatment as an adult is a chance to finally get the smile you've always wanted; to straighten your teeth, correct your bite, and give your confidence a big boost. At least, that's the end goal.

Before you get there, you're going to have to put up with some form of braces while your teeth are realigned. As an adult, it's natural to feel more self-conscious about this than younger brace-wearers do. Even though people aren't all going to be looking at your teeth, you might feel as though they are, which doesn't make you feel too great.

Luckily, advancements in recent years mean there are now teeth-straightening options available that are less visible than the classic braces. But are they really that good? Which ones are the least visible? And are there any downsides? Here's the information you need on the least visible types.

Clear 'invisible' braces

The most well-known of the hidden braces are the clear plastic ones. They fit completely over your teeth, and once they're in place, they're hardly noticeable at all. They're not completely invisible and can still be seen if you look closely, but they blend in much better than the ordinary metal style of braces. As long as you have realistic expectations, you shouldn't be disappointed with their appearance.

Treatment with this style of braces isn't always suitable, particularly with severe misalignment. It can also be a longer process, but that's a small price to pay if you're self-conscious.

Lingual braces

These braces are similar to the traditional metal ones, with one key difference: they attach to the back of your teeth instead of the front. This keeps them largely out of the way where they won't be seen.

Some people find it causes problems with speaking, but you should be able to get used to it with practice. They're also less widely available than the other types, but there's becoming more common gradually.

Ceramic braces

With a similar design to metal braces, the ceramic type still has wires which are visible. However, the parts that attach to your teeth are made from ceramic, which blends in more effectively. Since this is the largest visible part of the braces, it makes them far more subtle. Although they're not as well hidden as some, they still make a big difference, and they can be used for any treatment normal braces would otherwise be used for.
